If you're not sure about what carpet to choose, you're not alone. Carpet
shopping can be confusing, even overwhelming. Here are some tips to help
you pick the carpet that's best for you. Before you begin shopping, consider things that will affect you carpet choice. The way you live : Do you have children, pets, a lot of visitors? Choose durable carpet that features the performance attributes you need. Your look: Consider the room's color scheme and furnishings. Take along upholstery and drapery samples to make sure the carpet will match and give you the coordinated look you want.
Your budget: Most people shopping for quality can expect to spend
from $3.50 to $7.50 per square foot,
including pad and installation. A good way to
budget is to estimate the life of the carpet and calculate your cost per year.
The fiber used in a carpet will, to a significant extent, determine its wearability. The more you know about fiber, the easier it will be to choose the right carpet for your home. They include Nylon, the strongest, most durable and most widely used fiber, as well as polyester, polypropylene and wool. You may be tempted to buy on the basis of color alone. But smart shoppers understand that quality determines the overall look and life of your carpet. Carpet pile is the yarn on the face of the carpet (and it's not sold by the ounce). Most prefer a firm dense pile. Don't mistake a bulky, soft feel as a sign of performance. The most durable carpets have tightly twisted yarns, densely packed into the carpet. Be sure to ask to see the new soft nylon fiber carpets. They have a cotton like feel with the performance you know to expect of nylon. Here are some descriptions to help you choose a carpet that meets your needs: Loop Pile: Loop carpets have a continuous, uncut surface that resists crushing and matting. Berber-style loop carpets wear well and are suitable for any room. Cut Pile: Cutting the loops exposes the yarn ends. You'll find cut piles in a variety of styles to suit any room in your home. Velvet - Plush: This is a rich, luxurious surface best suited for rooms with little traffic such as a formal living room or dining room. The surface readily shows footprints and vacuum marks. Cut Pile Saxony: This style is great for a less formal room such as a family room or den. But it will show footprints more easily than a textured style. Textured Saxony: This style is tough enough for any room and won't show dirt or footprints easily. Frieze: This is a smart choice for any high traffic area such as family rooms, kids rooms or foyers. Frieze ("free-zay") carpets are less likely to show vacuum marks or footprints than other styles. Cut and Loop: These carpets combine the two piles, usually in a pattern. The styles vary from casual multi-colored to solid colored, highly styled patterns. |
